New Movable Type

I just wanted to give a shout out and some thanks to my brother and the other folks at 803 Productions. They host my blog and, by the looks of things, have just upgraded Movable Type (the blogging software I use). You may not be able to notice much on the outside, but the upgrade has made things a little easier on this end.

Thanks, guys.

Still kicking

Just wanted everyone to know that I'm still blogging. Holiday business and travel has eaten up a lot of time, as has simple laziness. I'm also working on a redesign of professorpope.com.

Just a quick summary of what's been going on over the holiday break:

Movies watched: King Kong (GREAT!), Scarface on DVD (who actually believes this film is good?)

Reading: A People's History of the United States (long overdue, I know)

Listening to: Kicking Television, the new live Wilco album (which is phenomenal)

Travel: Irving, Texas to visit Sarah's family. Conway for a brief visit to my family, particularly my grandmother, who has been ill. About to go to Edisto Island for New Year's and Amelia Harper's 30th Birthday.

Vists by: Andre, Heidi, Dad, Teresa

Working on: New, revised syllabus for my 110 course, syllabus for Teaching in a Democracy (graduate course for MAT students), grant proposal, and figuring out what my new line(s) of research will be.

Blogging in public

I've decided not to write too much in my blog about school or work. I'd hate to post something when I was in a bad mood, then have my students or fellow professors read it, take it the wrong way, and get angry. I will probably make general comments and talk about my life as an assistant professor, but steer away from specifics. I'd be anxious to hear opinions from all of you out there on how to best handle this. I want to be honest with myself and my readers, whomever they may be, about what's happening in "Professor Pope Land," but not damage that land in the process.

Recatigorization

I just added some new categories to help with the site organization.

They are:
"Gaming" which will cover D&D and other gaming related material.
"Pictures" which will cover thoughts on movies or other visual art.
"Sounds" which will cover music and concert reviews.
"Words" which will cover thoughts on books (including comics). I know, comics have pictures, too, but I have to pick one. And I read comics, whereas I watch movies.

Grumble, Grumble. . .

I had grandiose plans to get a lot of work done on this site over the weekend, but Adelphia let me down. . .

I couldn't access the site all weekend! I am not sure what was wrong. All I know is some sites would work, some would not, and some would take forever to load. My email sites (gmail and yahoo) worked fine. I was able to access the IMDB last night to see who played Patsy Cline in "Coal Miner's Daughter." (Beverly D'Angelo, better known as the mom in the "Vaction" movies). My banking sites would work, but very slowly. Yet, I couldn't get to Professor Pope, ENWorld, or some of the furniture sites I wanted to browse. I was really frustrated. I place the blame on my ISP, Adelphia. Their cable modem service is pretty flaky at times.

Well, c'est la vie. When I couldn't acess the site Friday night, I just wrote an entry in Word. I'll paste it in later. It will just be out of order.

Style Isn't Everything

After much tinkering with the stylesheets and colors for the site, I'm just going to leave it as it is for now. I found this stylesheet at Moveablestyle.com. I also found a great Moveable Type resource page, which includes lots of tips for beginners, at Elise's Site. Her site has been super helpful and I highly recommend it.

There's also a nice color mixer at Colormatch 5K.

As far as the site goes, next I am going to try and figure out how to add a "Links" section to the sidebar. I also want to try and figure out how to spruce things up a bit with pictures or graphics.
